In this in-person workshop, we will explore some important concepts about dependency management. We all use software dependencies as part of our ongoing daily work. Those fundamental parts of our software can be used at different stages of the development lifecycle: development, runtime execution, and testing. Every time we add one new dependency to our project we need to think about the consequences in the long run. The concerns are considerable from security to maturity, to the level of dependency and type of dependency. In this workshop we will introduce several Best Practices for selecting, managing, scanning, and maintaining control of our dependencies in addition to that we will use several tools on the NPM domain to help us with our dependency resolution and management process.

Demystifying the SBOM’s Impact on Secure Software Deployment
With the White House’s cybersecurity executive order in May 2021, the Software Bill of Materials (aka SBOMs), graduated from being a “nice to have” to a “must-have” global standard when developing and deploying secure software from the cloud? In a nutshell, SBOMs provide visibility into which components make up a piece of software and detail how it was put together, so it’s easy to determine if it contains security and compliance issues.
In this talk, we’ll discuss
► What exactly is an SBOM?
► Securing your Software Supply Chain
► Why SBOM must be a key element of your software development life cycle’s (SDLC) security and compliance approach
► The misconceptions that exist around SBOMs
► Insights and best practices on SBOM creation and usage.

Do you love the Kubernetes API and user experience? Do you love declaratively defining your application as a Deployment or Daemonset, a Service, and maybe an Ingress manifest, and letting the magic of Kubernetes handle the orchestration of your application deployment? We do too! Until now, if you had a Kubernetes application with some dependencies on an AWS resources (like S3 Bucket, SNS Topic, DynamoDB Table, etc) you needed to use another tool in addition to Kubernetes, like Terraform or CloudFormation, to manage the creation and lifecycle of those resource dependencies.
Can we do better? Kubernetes API is extensible and can be extended to manage even non-kubernetes resources! In this talk we will introduce this concept, of managing cloud resources through Kubernetes API, and discuss how this concept affects current software development and deployment practices. We will also explore the AWS Controllers for Kubernetes (ACK), which lets you define your application’s AWS managed service resources using the familiar Kubernetes API and manifests! No need to use a different configuration system or log into the AWS Console! Come learn about the design of the AWS Controllers for Kubernetes, what features this new project provides, and the roadmap for service integration over the coming months.
Productizing ML with Kubernetes – Almog Baku
Productizing ML is hard, and many companies are starting to build their own infrastructure for “operationalized AI” and kinda re-inventing the wheel. That being said, if you use a modern cloud-native stack, you can build your own AI Infrastructure stack fairly smoothly on Kubernetes.
In this talk, Almog, a Kubernetes maintainer, will review with us the various trends and open-source tools to build your own Production-ready AI Infrastructure stack. We’ll talk about the various stages on the pipeline, about Kubeflow, KServe, Seldon, RaptorML and other ML k8s buzzwords a sneak peek into the future (which is actually… quite present).

TinkerForge provides a variety of sensors and devices: an air quality sensor, analog joystick, linear potentiometer, speaker, LCD screen, infrared distance sensor, and many more. We’ve used some of these devices to create an infrared piano. Two IR sensors detect where you place your hand over two sets of keys. The speaker beeps at a frequency matching the note for that key. The LCD prints the distance detected by each IR sensor. And the linear potentiometer controls volume. The software that runs the piano uses TinkerForge’s C/C++ API bindings. These are easy to retrieve from ConanCenter using the Conan C/C++ package manager. This session examines the various sensors, devices, and codes used to create the piano. You’ll go behind the scenes of the piano’s development, and its iterations, and see how you can start creating similar projects.

Every so often, you’ll read a performance benchmark (of a Java or other application), with bold claims for how well X performs compared to Y. Testing the performance of your Java application is an artform rather than engineering and is a minefield of misconceptions, misunderstanding, and misinformation. In this session, we will review the basics and give you concrete steps to build a robust performance testbed for your application. We will be looking at this from a real-world server-side application point of view, specifically for Java apps. We’ll review common problems and how to avoid them. We’ll cover these topics while building up a performance test and running it live:
Define your goals: SLA, latency, throughput, stability
Test env vs. Production env for testing
The impact of GC on Java app performance
Tools for setting up, driving load, and getting perf test results
Testing application infrastructures like Kafka, Spark, and Cassandra
Operating system settings, JVM settings, memory sizing, and CPU sizing
Analyzing perf test results and finding bottlenecks that are both apparent and not obvious

DevOps for developers (or maybe against them?!)
“DevOps” is the operations people’s crafty plan to make developers do other people’s work, but we are smart enough to see right through this naive rebranding trick!
Baruch suggests you think about it: we, the developers, have written all the code. It passes all the tests; it obviously works, and works well (Are we a little proud? We are!); so we are DONE.
This is a fun and provocative talk. I am starting with claiming that developers have no incentives to do any DevOps and will work my way to explain why although there is some truth in that, it doesn’t’ really matter. The business must commit to DevOps and once the business committed, everyone has to be on-board.
